Unapologetically Taking Representation to the Next Level: The Story of RainbowMe

Jan 22, 2022

Anyone that tells you, or makes you believe that entrepreneurship is easy, is lying to you.  As an entrepreneur, we are driven by a vision, that a lot of times, nobody else can see, but us. For most of us, that vision is tied to our passion. In our endless pursuit of our vision and passion, we lose, we fail, and we fall. But, we take that loss, we take those failures, and we take that falling, and we get back up, sometimes reluctantly, to keep our eyes on that dream. We gain, we build, and we come out even stronger.

My name is Kya Johnson. Seven years ago, I had a moment, where I felt like I wasn't fulfilling the purpose that God had for me. I was working then, and still work now, as an attorney at my father's law firm. So, in essence, I was already an entrepreneur working for myself. I had involved myself in investing early on, and had a good foundation. My passion however, didn't lie with just being an entrepreneur. My passion, the thing that no matter what I was doing in life that always had my heart, was to be and do something positive for kids. Especially, something positive for kids of color.

In 2014, I sat down and I wrote a vision of creating a space where kids of color saw nothing but positive images of themselves as main characters. Once I wrote that vision, I prayed about how I was to bring that vision to life, and the first thing that God showed me, dealt with something that I had NO clue about. The idea that came to mind was to build and create an entire platform that celebrated the entertainment space for kids, featuring kids of color. At that time, that idea was a subscription based video on demand service similar to Netflix.

I call that moment my "burning bush" moment. Do you ever hear God tell you to do something and you look back sideways to God and think, or even say out loud "God, I think you have the wrong person because..uhmmm...I am not equipped to do what you are asking,"...lol! That was me. I had this massive vision of what this space called RainbowMe Kids looked like and NO CLUE about the first thing to do to get it done. When God answered my prayer with the "you don't have to have it all figured out, just take the first step," I was like, alright God, I will trust you.

I share this part of the story to say, that first of all, when God gives you the vision, he will supply who, and what you need. Also, while you think you have it figured out...you don't. He just asks that you trust Him and let Him work. Third, He is not promising you the road is going to be easy. He is promising you that He will be there through it all.

So, we push forward, I am able to get a team together, raise some money, and we launch this video on demand platform to fanfare. I mean, we were in major magazines and newspapers like USA Today and Tech Crunch, and, we were recognized by Google!!! I was over the moon, if these people can see what we are doing, then surely our audience is going to love us. Welll....that was only partially true. We began getting a lot of followers and people who joined our email list, but people to subscribe to our initially offering, was low....very...very low.

We tried different ways to speak to our audience, and market what we were doing. We always strived to be the premiere place to find positive content for kids of color. No matter, how we presented our video on demand platform however, it wasn't working. This...this right here was a hard time. Licensing and creating content requires a lot of money....a lot of money. The money we raised in the beginning was used for these purposes and it was GONE. Imagine a vision so powerful like the one I described, doing what you believed was "the work" necessary, and then falling...flat becuase the money was spent, and the income wasn't coming in.

This was a fall, this was a low point. Despite it all, I...didn't...quit. I still believed in the vision and the purpose. I also believed that there was still so much out there that could be done still in line with the vision, and in line with what, by that time, the RainbowMe audience was saying they wanted.

In 2019, the idea for an augmented reality technology children's book that celebrated main fairytale characters of color was created. O is for Oshun was created, followed by our second book How Kofi Amero Became the Hero of Amero.  Two years later, almost 3000 of you have enjoyed the magic of these amazing books. It turns out, that THIS was, at least the beginning, of the vision God had put in place back in 2014. The coolest part about it though, was that the technology, at least for books, didn't exist then. That is how God works though, he tells you that you have to take the first step. He has the rest lined up already.

This isn't the end of the RainbowMe Story. Even after 7 years, we are just getting started. There will be a moment soon, where you won't be able to go anywhere if it involves children's entertainment, and see something with RainbowMe Kids name attached to it in a positive way. Thank you for believing in me and the vision of RainbowMe. Thank you for being apart of this journey.

Gratefully,

Kya Johnson
