June 19, 2021, people from all over the United States will be celebrating Juneteenth. But what IS Juneteenth, and why are we celebrating?
Juneteenth has many names. It includes Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, Liberation Day, and Jubilee Day! Whatever name makes you happy, this day is celebrated as the day that the slaves in Texas, learned that slavery had been abolished.
This is important, because, even though slavery was abolished with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, there was no efficient way to spread the news over a large area in a short amount of time. In fact the only way the news that slavery had been abolished traveled throughout the US was as a result of the Union army soldiers enforcing the new laws.
Well, since Texas, was so far away south from a lot of the other states, the slaves in Texas did not learn that they were free until June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This is how the celebration started, and it has spread throughout the United States ever since then.
In fact, there are more major companies now, more than ever, that are declaring Juneteenth an official holiday AND joining in on the celebration!
